I was assigned Caslon. Here are some of my initial notes and first impressions:

As well as some existing posters and spreads I found:

Typeface Exercises & Spread Mock-ups

Class Discussion

  • Characteristics and mood of the spread should be reflective of characteristics and personality of the typeface itself: don’t try to make a loud, colorful spread for a quiet and subtle typeface, and vice versa!
  • Caslon is a low-contrast, readable typeface: take that into account for the layout of the spread as well.

9.30 — “Final” Crit

The spread I brought in

Things we talked about:

  • Readability is the most important!
  • Difference in priority between poster and spread in terms of aesthetics, composition, readability, etc.

Post-crit Edits

Talking with the C juniors

  • kerning is too wide
  • rag should be less significant
  • the three offset letters make for a more interesting composition
  • but, why ETA? Choice of letters could be distracting
  • Do more color studies!

Green:

10.1

10.5 — Feedback from Vicki

After showing Vicki my mock-animation-storyboard, she suggested trying the same color scheme for the spread as well: the purple/cream/red — and mentioned that the green feels a bit random.

  • Good composition
  • Watch the drop cap, feels a little “dinky,” try having it sit inside the text

10.17 — Refinements & Final Spread

What I Did

The new colors definitely fit better into the context for my typeface, but the ampersand looked a little dull and cold. I changed both the background and ampersand to be a little warmer, and also all the features in the top right to have dotted lines. The warm purples definitely go with the bright red/pink and cream much better! I also added page numbers in the bottom corners.

:) I enjoy my final spread! Hurrah for pretty ampersands&&&
